family and friends. we have tourists coming from japan and france, and instead of just seeing pier 39, they are also venturing into the mission, spending money at the local readers shop and gaining knowledge about something they have now become passionate about. one other example is a homeless man who lives in the tenderloin at a shelter. him volunteering in the tenderloin. realized that there was a huge opportunity for people to educate themselves about homelessness in san francisco because it is something that the city, for better or worse, is known for. instead of ignoring that segment of town -- because you do not typically think of it as a tourist destination -- we wanted to see what were the strengths that it could bring as a tourism opportunity? our guide has now made enough money to buy a cell phone so that he can operate more of these tours, and it has spread to personalities such as the author, who recommended it to all of his friends, and the deputy mayor of atlanta who came on the tour to inform his homeless policy in atlanta. we really see the reach of this, not only taki

its settlement in the west bank and east jerusalem. on top of that britain, france and sweden summoned the israeli ambassadors to their country to condemn this move and france and england have said there is an appetite to disapprove of israel right now. what's happening to the tense situation there? >> the israeli response of calling for a settlement construction is a response that's viewed negatively across the international community by the united states as well as in many parts of israel itself. so it's a move intended to play to the base of benjamin netanyahu's core constituency. it doesn't help build confidence in a diplomatic process. this reiterates why the united states does need to be involved and engaged in resolving this issue. both side right now are using international pressure points to try to make their arguments and really are stuck in a stalemate. >> joel rubin. great to have you here. thank you, sir. of course the big breaking news we told you earlier from england. prince william and kate are expecting their first baby april a future heir to the throne. we'll

settlement construction. now, european nations including britain, spain, france, sweden, denmark, have all "summoned israeli ambassadors" to their capital cities in protest. officials say it is unlikely they will go through the more formal process of recalling their diplomats. david lee is live in jerusalem. how is israel's responding to this, david lee? >>reporter: a short time ago we talked to a source in the prime minister's office. he said and i quote, "the decision stands." what we talking about, and it is important we be clear, the 3,000 or so housing units you mention that would be in jerusalem as well as the west bank. israel, at the same time, made another decision saying in the planning stages, are another settlement expansion, this one in an area that the israelis identify as e1, 4 1/2 square miles outside of jerusalem and it is much more of a problem because the palestinians say if there is no construction in the area outside of jerusalem, they will not be able to have contiguous land and cannot have a palestinian state, and what they will be stuck with is, essentially, a crazy

definitive? does israel really worry what francois o'land of france thinks? >> normally they do because these two countries have been very friendly with israel in recent years but israel is in an election period before january 22 when netanyahu stops the gaza war without a land operation. there are a lot of people saying, hey, you didn't go all the way against hamas. they ate into a huge share of his voters. i think he wants to say no one is going to be able to outflange me from the right. part of the tragedy of this conflict is that the parties cannot agree on a common definition of what is provocative except they agree on one thing. that they each assume the worst of the other side's ultimate intention. israel might say, look, this is political theater. ultimately we're going to discuss this. there will be a two-mile tunnel from north to south. we won't receiver the west bank at all, but the media, the government, everyone says, no, no, there must be something nefarious going on here. they need to get to the negotiating table and discuss the most sensitive issues. >> suarez: g

happening in europe, you'll see a similar story there. actually a little stronger gains. in france, the cac up by about two-thirds of 1%. in germany, the dax up by 0.4% and ftse in london is up by a quarter percent. in asia overnight, you did see the hang seng down by about 1.2%. shanghai composite down, as well, down by 1%. in consider rea, the kospi up by 0.6%. oil prices have been a little weaker. down by about seven crept cents. and ten year note yielding 1.61%. that's been stuck in a tight range for quite a while. take a look at the dollar this morning. you'll see the euro at this point is still above 1.30, 1.3029 even though the dollar down across the board. dollar-yen at 82.10. gold prices this morning are up by about $8. as the fiscal cliff approaches, we're wondering what we can expect from the markets. our guest hosts again barry knapp and richard bernstein. barry, you're concerned about the direction the talks have taken. >> yeah, it's interesting as i actually traveled through europe last week, there is all this focus on the timing of getting a deal. but there is not ne
